The breast gland is an essential part of the female body, and its development is one of the most important differences between the sexes.
Breasts are one of the most significant elements of female beauty, a symbol of human sexuality, an emblem of motherhood and one of the most important erogenous zones. For this reason, the volume and shape of the breasts are of vital concern to the female figure.
Breast deformities can cause an imbalance in the aesthetics of the body and possible psychological and functional disorders, such as physical discomfort, back pain and agitation of the spinal column due to excess weight, the early appearance of degenerative osteoarthritis and changes in breathing that in time can lead to pulmonary emphysema and, simultaneously, can damage the cardiovascular system. They can also cause skin lesions in the area below the breasts with bad odour and dark residual pigmentation.
Breast reduction surgery is a particularly gratifying surgery, because it improves the appearance of breasts, prevents and relieves the side-effects of having large breasts and benefits the patient psychologically.
The ideal age for this surgery is between 16 and 20, when the breasts are fully developed and are still able to recuperate fully from the surgery. The surgery should enable the breast to be reduced adequately, without interfering with the breasts' physical function of breast feeding, and the results produced are aesthetically pleasing.
However, the surgery is usually performed in women between 25 and 50. Older patients will also obtain excellent benefits from breast reduction, and they will be pleased by the improvement in posture, in spinal column pain and in lesions on the skin under the breast.
It is necessary to carry out a pre-operative examination, which consists of a Mammography and a Cardio-respiratory analysis and evaluation.
Photographs will be taken to study the area to be operated on and to compare them with post-operative photographs, evaluating the results obtained after the reduction.
The procedure is done with General Anaesthesia in the operating theatre of a Clinic, and it requires the patient to remain in the Clinic for 24 to 48 hours.
The surgery lasts 2 to 3 hours, depending on the size of the breasts.
If the patient is a smoker, she must quit smoking for at least 10 days before and after the procedure in order to avoid complications and after-effects.
After the surgery, the patient should go to the doctor's office to receive the necessary dressings, and during 10 to 15 days the patient must not strain her arms or lift heavy weights. The stitches will be taken out between 5 and 15 days.
The patient should use the indicated bra, without hooks, during the post-operative period 24 hours a day for 2 to 3 months following the procedure.
The evaluation of the results should be done between 6 and 12 months after the surgery, after swelling has subsided and the healing period has finished.
The complications of this surgery are haematoma, infection and necrosis on the skin or nipple. Complications are avoided by using a careful haemostasis and an antibiotic prophylaxis and by choosing the correct surgical technique.
The after-effects are asymmetric breasts, breast scars and temporary sensitivity problems.
Resulting scars and the formation of compressed scars depend on the type of healing of each patient and are independent of the surgery.
