RHINOPLASTY

Location Webcam Print

Rhinoplasty - often better known as a nose job or nose reshaping, is one of the most common cosmetic surgery procedures. The nose is a complex organ, made up of a number of different elements including bone, cartilage, mucous membrane, skin and muscle. It also plays a key physiological role which should not be forgotten: it humidifies, filters and warms the air we breathe, Cosmetic nose surgery, in certain cases, can also be functional, for example, correcting a deviated nasal septum.
The difficulty of this surgery depends on the type of deformity, skin quality, among other factors. There are various kinds of ideal nose. The normal nose shape for a Caucasian has a nasolabial angle of 90º for men and 100-110º for women. Nevertheless, in actual practice, we need to strike a balance between the nose and the rest of the face, both in terms of size and shape. We shouldn't always look for the “standard nose” based on a famous actress or model as this might not suit another face.
It is of importance to remember that rhinoplasty has an effect on the patient's psychological well-being as well as a pleasing aesthetic effect. For this reason, he or she needs to be well-informed as to all aspects of the surgery in order to be fully aware of its expected results. The post-op period for a rhinoplasty is simple and painless. Complications are rare, and, in any case, any imperfections can be easily corrected.

BEFORE THE SURGERY

As is the case with all surgery, a pre-op study needs to be undertaken, with analysis, cardio-respiratory checks and a photographic study.

ANAESTHESIA

This surgery may either be carried out under general anaesthetic or with sedation and local anaesthesic.

SCARRING

Rhinoplasty is carried out endonasally, meaning that all scarring is invisible.

CORRECTIONS

The classic “Roman” or “hook” nose can be easily rectified with a scalpel with spectacular and permanent results. In the case of sunken nose bridges, cartilage, bone or an inert material can be implanted. A fattened tip of the nose caused by lateral cartilage hypertrophy can also be corrected by working on the cartilage in question. Cosmetic surgery can also be used to correct a deviated nasal septum and to eliminate respiratory problems.
Sometimes rhinoplasty is not enough to give the patient the harmonious face they were looking for. In such cases, we also need to work on the chin, adding an implant if necessary during the same surgery
After the rhinoplasty, a bandage is applied inside and the nose set in plaster for about 1 week in order to ensure it doesn't move and that scarring can take place unhindered.

POST SURGERY PERIOD

The patient will need to remain in the Clinic for 1 to 2 hours.
After the surgery there will be ecchymosis or bruising as well as edemas - a swelling to the eye lids - which will disappear in a few days
After 15 days, the patient may return to his or her normal work and social life.
The nose will still be slightly swollen, although the edemas and bruising will have completely disappeared.
After a month, the patient should go for a check-up, and then again after 3 months, in order to monitor evolution. The final result, however, will not be apparent until a year after the surgery.
